After 11 years of speaking, from corporate boardrooms to middle school gymnasiums, I’ve learned that every audience is different. Every stage feels unique.
But one truth never changes:
The way you deliver your message matters just as much as the message itself.
The Salsa Story That Stuck
I remember speaking to a group of middle schoolers. Somewhere in the middle of my talk, I said:
“I make so much fresh salsa, you could swim in it.”
It was a simple, silly line meant to make them laugh.
The next day, their parents reached out to thank me. That one sentence had stayed with their kids and sparked conversations at home.
That’s when I realized just how much power and responsibility we carry when we speak. We never truly know which words will take root in someone’s heart.
Why Words Matter More Than We Think
Science backs this up.
- Relatable messages stick. A Stanford study found that emotionally engaging, relatable messages are 60% more memorable than data alone (Stanford Graduate School of Business). Additional research from Stanford scholar Jennifer Aaker shows that stories are more persuasive and evocative than facts alone, moving people both emotionally and intellectually (Stanford Women’s Leadership Innovation Lab).
- Adaptability builds trust. Harvard research shows that tailoring your delivery to the audience strengthens connection, whether you’re speaking to a CEO or a seventh grader. Similarly, research on adaptive communication demonstrates that adjusting your style to different audiences improves trust, cohesion, and overall effectiveness (ResearchGate).
Our words don’t just inform. They transform. They can plant a seed, shift a perspective, or open a door someone didn’t know existed....
Three Ways to Make Your Words Matter
- Lead with empathy. Step into your audience’s world before you speak. What do they care about? What do they need most right now?
- Be flexible. Adjust your tone, pace, and stories to fit the moment. A room full of teenagers isn’t the same as a conference of executives, and that’s the beauty of it.
- Plant one unforgettable line. Choose a phrase that’s vivid, simple, and emotional. You never know when it will be the one they carry with them for years.
💭 Before your next meeting, presentation, or conversation, ask yourself: What’s the one sentence I hope they remember tomorrow?
Your Voice Has Influence
Whether you’re on a stage, in a classroom, or across the dinner table, your words matter more than you think. They can be a bridge, a light, or the spark that changes someone’s direction.
So choose them with care. Deliver them with heart. And remember, you never know which sentence will be the one they never forget.
