Embracing Adversity & Owning Your Superpower

Embracing Adversity & Owning Your Superpower

Most people don’t know this about me, but the truth is—I’m an introvert. After I delivered back‑to‑back talks at the WFF Women’s Leadership Conference in Dallas and signed books with two amazing groups of leaders who keep our food‑chain humming. If you’ve ever felt stage‑fright, networking nausea, or social‑media jitters, this story is for you.

From Awkward Hellos to Championship Mindset

When someone approaches me out of nowhere, my brain does cartwheels: Say something smart… don’t be weird… smile! The stress is real, and sometimes I can see that awkward energy boomerang straight back at them. But adversity—whether it’s social anxiety or a broken collarbone—can be the perfect gym for mental reps. As a resilience speaker, I’ve learned that leaning into discomfort actually unlocks what I call a championship mindset.

Research backs this up: a 2023 phenomenological study of introverted leaders found that structured reflection and intentional "stretch" exposures improved empathy and team trust scores by 18 % (digitalcommons.liberty.edu), while a 2024 McKinsey analysis concluded that leaders who openly share their vulnerability foster stronger connection and engagement. The Dallas Double‑Header: Kayaking on Stage

My anxiety and heart palpitations were real! My fitness tracker insists I kayaked twice while pacing the stage 😂, but the real workout was sharing hard‑won lessons with hundreds of women in leadership who influence what America eats every day. Each talk is a micro‑adversity: heart racing, palms sweating, perfection gremlins whispering. Yet every time I trade fear for vulnerability, the room leans in—and connection happens.

Crafting a New Keynote: “Why Adversity Is the Key to Future Identity”

Big shout‑out to my coach Eric Termuende for tightening my story arc and to Michelle Joyce of Michelle Joyce Speakers for helping me create more magic from our Lowe’s Keynote debrief. Together we’ve shaped a keynote that shows audiences how every setback is a setup to become someone new.

 Vulnerability: The Hidden Superpower

Every time I open up with vulnerability on a stage, I watch eyes soften and heads nod. That sliver of honesty builds instant trust. Vulnerability isn’t weakness; it’s a bridge. When we drop the armor, we invite people to meet us soul‑to‑soul—whether one‑on‑one or one‑to‑one‑thousand.

Mini‑Challenge: Before your next presentation or team meeting, name one fear out loud. Feel the room shift.

Own Your Introvert, Ambivert, or Extrovert Edge

  • Introverts: deep focus & listening lasers.
  • Ambiverts: situational shape‑shifters.
  • Extroverts: energy amplifiers.

No type is better—each is a tool. The win comes from knowing which superpower to deploy and when.

Bring the 3R Framework to Your Event

If your audience struggles with any type of adversity, vision, and purpose, a resilience speaker who’s turned personal adversity into advantage can help them unlock their hidden edge.

Final Thought: Adversity Is Your Invitation

The next time awkwardness, anxiety, or any adversity knocks, remember—it’s an invitation to discover a strength you haven’t used yet. Accept the invite. Own the superpower.

So, which one are you—Introvert, Ambivert, or Extrovert? And what’s your superpower?

Stay humble. Stay bold.
