Great Leaders Don’t Just Build Businesses—They Build Leaders

When I first became a CEO, I thought leadership meant having all the answers. After all, wasn’t that what leaders were supposed to do, solve problems, make decisions, and steer the ship?

But everything changed when I stopped trying to be the one with every solution… and started building leaders within my team.

The Moment That Shifted Everything

Instead of leading from behind a desk, I stepped onto the front lines.

One day, in the middle of a salsa production challenge, I asked a team member a question that became a cornerstone of my leadership style:

“If you were the CEO of this company, what would you do?”

At first, he hesitated. Then slowly, something powerful began to happen. He started thinking differently, not just about the problem, but about ownership.

Soon, he wasn’t waiting for instructions. He was innovating, collaborating, and stepping into leadership himself. This is the kind of thing that began to happen collectively!

And when I stepped back, the business scaled forward.

The Science of Empowered Leadership

Research confirms what I witnessed firsthand:

  • Harvard Business Review / HBR publishes articles showing that empowering employees to make decisions leads to stronger performance, higher engagement, and better innovation. For example: 5 Strategies to Empower Employees to Make Decisions shows how shifting decision-making to front-line teams improves autonomy and motivation.
  • Another HBR article, Research: How to Delegate Decision-Making Strategically, discusses how delegating decision authority can help empower employees and allow leaders to focus on high-level vision.
  • In organizational psychology, the Athlete Leadership Development Within Teams study describes how leadership development within a group enhances collective effectiveness and fosters informal leadership growth across team members.

These studies reinforce the principle that when leaders build leaders, they create resilient, high-performing, adaptive teams.

3 Practices to Build Leaders Within Your Team

  1. Ask better questions. Instead of giving solutions, invite your team to step into the CEO’s shoes.

  2. Create space for ownership. Let them make decisions, even if it means failing forward. Mistakes are part of growth.

  3. Model collaboration, not command. Show that leadership is about being shoulder-to-shoulder, not above.

💭 If you want your team to grow stronger, ask yourself: Am I solving everything for them—or creating space for them to solve it themselves?

Why This Matters More Than Ever

True leadership isn’t about the spotlight. It’s about shining light on others.

When leaders create leaders, businesses thrive. But more importantly, people thrive. They discover new levels of courage, creativity, and confidence that ripple far beyond the workplace.

Final Thought: Leadership That Multiplies

Great leaders don’t measure success by how many followers they have.
They measure it by how many leaders they’ve created.

Stay humble. Lead with heart.

Because leadership that multiplies is leadership that lasts.
