Talk to Magie

We don’t become who we are in the easy moments.

We become who we are in the fire—when life tests us, stretches us, and dares us to rise.

I was born in an orphanage in Mexico. Later, I found myself homeless in the U.S., with no food and nowhere to sleep. It was during those low moments—when most would have given up—that something powerful was born inside me.

That something was identity.

And it wasn’t shaped by comfort. It was shaped by adversity.

Adversity Isn’t the End—It’s the Beginning

We’re taught to avoid discomfort. Society tells us that pain is something to fix or flee from. But here’s the truth: Adversity is one of life’s greatest teachers.

When life knocks us down, it also gives us a chance to stand up differently—to stand up with purpose.

Without adversity, I would not have learned how resourceful I could be. I wouldn’t have started a salsa company with $800 and no business background. I wouldn’t have developed the mindset that helped me lead a multimillion-dollar brand. And I wouldn’t be standing on stages today, speaking to thousands around the world.

Adversity didn’t break me. It built me.

The Identity Hidden in Hardship

When you’re in a storm, it’s hard to imagine there’s a rainbow waiting. But identity isn’t something we discover once everything is perfect. It’s something we forge in the middle of chaos.

Your future self is being sculpted by your present challenges.

The pain you feel right now might be refining your purpose. The rejection you're facing might be redirecting you toward the breakthrough that changes everything. What you’re walking through today might be the very thing that prepares you to walk in your calling tomorrow.

3 Ways Adversity Shapes Our Future Identity

  • Adversity Forces Us to Become Resourceful

When you have limited options, creativity kicks in. You stop relying on what you’ve always known and start building what’s never been done. That’s how innovation is born—not in comfort, but in crisis.

In my life, that meant making salsa in a small kitchen while sleeping in the hallway. It meant selling my product door to door with no guarantees. And eventually, it meant selling my company to a Fortune 500 brand.

  • Adversity Builds Resilience

Resilience isn’t about having a perfect life. It’s about refusing to quit when life gets hard.

Every “no” I received was heartbreaking—but I learned to hear it differently.

Every ‘no’ is one step closer to the ‘yes’ that matters.

Resilience is learning how to wait with hope, to act with courage, and to rise with fire.

  • Adversity Awakens Something Greater

Adversity invites us to rise above ourselves. It whispers:

“You are not here just to survive—you are here to lead, to heal, to create change.”

It’s through adversity that I discovered I could be something bigger than my past. That’s what identity is all about—not where you came from, but what you choose to become.

Practical Takeaway: Ask Yourself These 3 Questions

Whenever you’re in a difficult season, ask:

  • What is this teaching me about who I really am?
  • What strengths am I developing right now?
  • How can I use this struggle to help others one day?

Those questions shift you from victim mode to leadership mode. They help you transform pain into purpose.

Your Story Isn’t Over

You may be in a season of struggle, loss, or uncertainty.

But remember this:

Your identity is not rooted in what happened to you—it’s revealed by how you rise.

  • You are stronger than you know.
  • You are braver than you feel.
  • And your story is far from over.

Let adversity do what it came to do—not to stop you, but to grow you. Because on the other side of hardship is a version of you the world desperately needs.
